I've always wondered about the 'They Call Me Mister Tibbs', but never had the balls to watch it. It can't possibly be any good, could it? Although now that I look it up on IMDB, I see that Martin Landau, Ed Asner, and Anthony Zerbe are in it, maybe it IS ok.
These are fantastic! Totally evocative of the period and you nailed Steiger with those orange shades. Wow!
And while I think They Call Me Mister Tibbs is OK, it is obvious by the title that they just wanted to ride off 'Heat Of The Night'. It was an attempt to make Sidney Poltier into a action guy, but he always has that dignified, urbane air to his performances that never quite reconciles with that. It worked in 'Heat' because it was a clash of cultures and preconceptions on many levels between the two leads in addition to the mystery and palpable racial tension. Great, great movie.
There was also one more movie in the Tibbs Trilogy (so to speak) called 'The Organization'. Again, it's OK but I wouldn't seek it out.
Omigod! I JUST saw this movie again last week! Awesome! I'm trying to find the "sequel" now...

Nothing beats the original, though.
