Mattel's INSTANT REPLAY (1971)

When I was a kid, I had this cool game called “Instant Replay.” Basically, it was a bunch of little 3 inch records that you popped into this little mini record player and it played an announcer announcing a great play of a particular sports hero. You know, a Willie Mays home run or an OJ Simpson touchdown or whatever.

OK, kinda corny, but most everything in the 1970’s was.

I loved these little records and especially the paintings of each sports hero on each disc.

Recently, just for the hell of it, I made a counterfeit disk featuring a player that hadn’t actually been on one of the discs.

Use your eagle eye and see if you can figure out which is the FAKE one…

  1. Oh man! Those are dynamite! I just played Battleship with my 6-year old daughter for the first time. Always great to see that 1967 box art. Check it out. http://instagr.am/p/N2kAl/

  2. yeah, I always liked that Mom and Sis couldn't play because they were doing 'womens work' and only the MEN of the family could handle important Military operations. (!)

  4. These are all really cool, but I'm gonna guess your contribution is John Mackey.

  6. Is it Bob Gibson? That full figure pitcher doesn't look very 'seventies' to me...

  7. Damn your eyes, McMahon! Yes, it's Bob Gibson. But the full figure of him was indeed from a 1970's photo.

  9. Darn, I changed my pick from Gibson to Broadway Joe. I thought you would go with a Red on Red Gibson design, but I usually pick Namath whenever given a chance. haha.

I also thought Gibson had a good chance of being left out of this record collection because I heard he had a difficult personality? I can see in those days moody athletes can be a turn off for fans... Dunno, but I'm glad you finally fit him into this Hall of Fame from childhood!

Very tough to tell your skillful work from those beautiful vintage examples, really awesome!

  10. Toby...Yeah, the Namath one is pretty tight in comparison to the others, I think maybe it's done by a different artist than the rest of them.

I've been trying to figure out who painted these things for 35 years. I think it might be a guy named William George, but can't confirm.
